Type 2 Diabetes Overview Inflicting
millions of adults worldwide, Type 2 Diabetes has become a
global pandemic. Often confused with Type 1 Diabetes, below
is more information about this deadly disease. |
|
Type 2 Diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and typically
affects adults over the age of forty years old. However, there
have been an increasing number of overweight younger men and women
being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. In many cases, when someone
refers to ‘diabetes’ they are referring to Type 2
Diabetes.
About Type 2 Diabetes
In most Type 2 Diabetes cases, insulin dependency is not required.
It is sometimes required at later stages of the disease however.
The usual treatments involve diet control or by diabetes medications
in the early years after the initial diagnosis. There are currently
tens of millions Americans diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, and
millions more worldwide. Approximately 95% of all diabetes patients
have Type 2 Diabetes. Mostly commonly it is diagnosed in adults
over the age of 55. Almost 85% of all Type 2 Diabetes patients
are overweight an unhealthy adults.
Diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes
The problem with Type 2 Diabetes is that the initial symptoms
are very mild and sometimes mimick other disease. Many doctors
do not diagnosis Type 2 Diabetes correctly and it is known that
there are almost a million Americans living with this type of
diabetes who do not know. This is particularly a problem with
the aging population as Type 2 Diabetes can cause major bodily
harm as it progresses.
Testing for Type 2 Diabetes is usually done through normal diabetes
testing procedures that help distinguish it from Type 1 Diabetes,
MODY and IGT. Sometimes, the actual base illness causing Type
2 Diabetes may even by cystic fibrosis, severe hemochromatosis
and even metabolic syndrome. The symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes include
obesity, elevated blood pressure, and higher then normal levels
of blood lipids.
Treatments for Type 2 Diabetes
There are several treatment methods for people living with Type
2 Diabetes, most involving lifestyle choices and changes. These
include weight loss through exercise and diet changes. Other treatment
methods for Type 2 Diabetes include home blood glucose testing,
oral medication, insulin (sometimes) and diabetes prevention treatments
including vitamin E and vitamin C.
Causes of Type 2 Diabetes
In most cases, Type 2 Diabetes is caused by poor insulin metabolism
in the body or a decrease in insulin production by the pancreas.
Many Type 2 Diabetes victims can actually produce enough insulin,
but for some medical and physiological reasons, the body is unable
to make use of this insulin effectively. This condition is usually
called insulin resistance. After a few years, insulin production
gradually decreases and glucose builds up in the blood, which
can be very damaging.
